The team from Roberts Constructions took home the trophy from the Gulf Men’s Open competition at the 49th HSBC World Rugby Sevens competition in Dubai.
The sporting festival hosts more than 900 rugby and netball matches over three days of competition, with nearly 300 teams competing and more than 100,000 spectators.
During the tournament, the Roberts team participated in a total of six matches.
The first day saw relatively easy victories against Abu Dhabi 45-12 and the Dubai Exiles 59-0. Our sole match on the second day was another entertaining try-fest with a 43-0 win against the Riyadh Scorpions.
The final day of the competition was the knockout stages. In the first match, the Roberts team faced up to the Ceylon Warriors, enjoying a close 29-26 win. Game two was another nail biter, with Roberts beating the Kuwait Scorpions 12-10. The win against the Scorpions paved the way to the grand final versus Sharjah Wanderers, which Roberts won 15-12 to take home the trophy.
According to Roberts’ Projects Director, Steve Huber, “We have a very competitive, fighting spirit at Roberts Constructions. We never give up and as a company, we have hired a team of people at the top of their game.
“The same goes for our Rugby 7s team – so it’s clear the formula works!” said Steve.
Stay tuned for November 2019 when Roberts will be defending the title.
